Project details

Repair work on a country road
A new layer of asphalt is laid by an asphalt paver

Situation

The heavily cracked asphalt surface of Raidinger Straße (L 227) in Lackenbach (Oberpullendorf district, Burgenland, Austria) required refurbishment as part of repair works. There was a risk of reflective cracking due to the equally cracked base and binder courses. To delay this in the long term, the Bau- und Betriebsdienstleistungszentrum Nord (BBN) decided to install an asphalt reinforcement grid. This was intended to significantly extend the road’s future service life. The grid was laid by staff from the responsible road maintenance depot.

Solution

To level the surface, 2–3 cm of the existing asphalt layer was first milled off the approximately 1,650 m long and 6.20 m wide section. A bitumen emulsion was sprayed onto the newly installed levelling layer in accordance with the installation instructions. The asphalt reinforcement grid was then laid over the entire surface on this substrate. Following installation, the asphalt reinforcement grid was covered with a 7 cm thick layer of asphalt (BT16).

Advantages

During the rehabilitation of the L 227, the use of asphalt reinforcement grids meant that the cracked binder and bituminous base courses did not need to be replaced. Asphalt reinforcement has proven its worth in a wide range of applications. Numerous scientific studies and many years of practical experience have shown that the use of asphalt reinforcement grids can extend the intervals between refurbishments many times over. Asphalt reinforcement is a technically sound and economical solution.
